Dean, Fitzhugh Join List of Leaders Endorsing Kanew
Former Congressman Lincoln Davis also backs Democrat in 7th District Congressional race
COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – Gubernatorial nominee Karl Dean has announced his endorsement of Justin Kanew in the 7th Congressional District race, along with Tennessee House of Representatives Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh and former Congressman Lincoln Davis.
The three join a growing list of Tennessee leaders backing Kanew.
“Justin and I have both been campaigning for the last year and I see how hard he works for the people of the 7th District,” said Dean. “We both know the people of Middle and West Tennessee want pragmatic leaders who aren’t focused on politics but on ensuring we all have access to quality schools, health care, good jobs and internet in rural areas.”
Fitzhugh, who ran against Dean in the primary election season, echoed Dean’s sentiments.
"We need Justin to represent Tennessee in Washington,” said Fitzhugh. “He listens to everyone about their concerns and we can trust him to fight through the mess in Washington and put Tennessee over party politics.
Lincoln Davis, who represented Tennessee’s 4th District in Congress, joined Dean and Fitzhugh in supporting Kanew. Davis, who initially supported Kanew’s opponent in the primary, said he’s convinced Kanew is the best candidate in the race.
“Tennessee’s 7th district doesn’t need an extremist politician,” said Davis. “We need someone like Justin who’s shown over the last year he’s willing to go to every county in the district and talk to everyone, regardless of their party affiliation.”
“There are few endorsements that mean more than having the confidence of these guys,” said Kanew. “They’ve each spent so many years of their lives improving life for Tennesseans. I value their knowledge and their advice, and I promise the people of Middle and West Tennessee I’ll give 100 percent to serve as well as they have.”
Other elected officials and former elected officials backing Kanew include:
- Bob Clement, Congressman, 5th District, 1988-2002
- Johnny Shaw, Representative, Tennessee House of Representatives, District 80 (Hardeman and Madison Counties)
- Rashidah Leverett, Montgomery County Commissioner
